You also get an actual tambourine to play, which adds to the chaos in the room. If you’ve seen the Bill Murray movie Lost in Translation – or spent any time in Korea or Japan – you probably know the kind of surreal experience to expect at Fantacity.Īt the end of every song, the two competing singers are assigned a score out of 100. I’m not sure exactly how this score is calculated – i.e.

While you’re singing, lyrics scroll across the TV screen, along with an endless loop of random stock footage – sunset scenes, a pair of parrots riding miniature bicycles, pedestrians walking in an unnamed city.  Also fun is the fact that a lot of the instructions for programming the karaoke machine are in Korean only.  Here’s a video posted on YouTube from a night at Fantacity (be sure to wait for the nice falsetto during the chorus):

The rooms at Fantacity are lined with well-worn couches, and miniature disco balls twirls overhead. The idea is that you order a few pitchers of beer and some appetizers at the bar, cart everything into your karaoke room, shut the door and get the party started.Īn added appeal at Fantacity is the retro element. The bar was probably built during the ’90s and it shows. Instead of flat screen TVs, there are hulking old Zenith sets in many rooms. The song list is pretty extensive, but seems weighted heavily to the same era, with lots of Bon Jovi and Aerosmith, plus all the requisite karaoke classics from ABBA. Guests, generally groups of friends celebrating a special occasion or just out for a night on the town, are assigned to their own private karaoke rooms. Inside, there’s a big TV screen, a karaoke machine and a pair of microphones.  So, instead of embarrassing yourself in front of an entire bar as you do your best Celine Dion, you only embarrass yourself in front of an intimate circle of friends.
